Ellen DeGeneres has been facing a ton of controversy in recent months as many people have come forward accusing the talk show host of being mean despite her tagline of “Be kind to one another.”
During quarantine, these accusations have escalated as a Twitter thread was created to expose the host’s past behavior–and most accounts were very unflattering. Although DeGeneres has yet to respond to–or even acknowledge–any of these rumors, sources have claimed that she is “at the end of her rope.”
That’s not all. Apparently, these rumors have even started to affect the popularity of Ellen’s talk show, which could mean even more trouble for the host.
According to the Film Daily, there has been a drastic change in Ellen's viewership since these accusations came to light, which is surprising considering the host's longterm success.
The article explains, "Ellen has been on air for seventeen seasons, and in that time nobody had any fear of her going off the air at any point... [Ellen] has seen pretty much nothing but success for nearly two decades."
However, it seems that her success streak might be coming to an end.
The article continues, "This run of success seems to be nearing an end though with a ratings drop of 14%, one might say it’s due to the quarantine nature of her show, but the ratings didn’t dip in March, they’re dropping now."
Although it's hard to tell exactly why Ellen is losing some of its audience, it's probable that it's related to the accusations against its host. It is hard to take a talk show host seriously when she is seen largely as a hypocrite.
The article explains the logistics of Ellen's ratings: "For the second week in a row Ellen has had a rating of 1.5, whereas the show usually & consistently hits an impressive 2.0 rating. (A 2.0 rating means 2% of all households are watching a show.) This has people starting to wonder if such a serious and large dip is going to get the show canceled."
Although the talk show host has remained quiet on the subject, this drop in viewership might push her to acknowledge the rumors and perhaps even apologize for her past behavior. Otherwise, it looks like the future of her show may be in serious trouble.
