Here’s How To Wear Spring’s Black & White Mixed Prints Trend

February 19, 2013 by Nikki Bogopolskaya

Black and white was all over runways for spring–whether in stripes, polka dots, checkerboard print, or muted florals, the pattern is certainly here to stay. Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, Helmut Lang and more showcased it in this seasons’s shows and we have no doubt we’ll be seeing tons of the trend on the streets for fall. The question is–how do you wear it?

Black and white separates are the easiest trick in the game, but mixing black and white prints for a mod, achromatic look, is a bit more difficult to pull off. Below are our four tips for making the pattern mixing look super polished and cool.

1. Since you’re only working with two colors, go ahead and go wild with your patterns. Wear a striped button-down tucked into a pair of floral pants, or mix a black on white polka dot skirt with a white on black polka dot blazer.

2. Add a dash of color with a pair of bright neon pumps or an awesome pastel color necklace. A statement piece will break up the monochrome in an unexpected way.

3. If you’re afraid of looking too loud, tie everything together with a black blazer or leather jacket.

4. For beginners to pattern mixing, start small–like these Zara shoes with this Proenza clutch.

It’s that simple–try the trend now.
