Once And For All, Here’s The Verdict On Castor Oil And Hair Growth

May 10, 2019 by Jeanine Edwards

A while back, one of my co-workers casually mentioned that she was using castor oil to help her eyebrows and eyelashes grow. I was immediately interested. Even though I never tweeze, wax or thread my eyebrows, they’re pretty sparse. I even have what looks like a small bald spot on one of them. And my eyelashes are fine, but really nothing special.

After a few days of wavering, I decided to buy a bottle of SheaMoisture’s 100% Pure Jamaican Black Castor Oil to see if this simple beauty trick would work for me. Fast forward four months (yes, I really committed) and the verdict is in. I really don’t think the castor oil did anything for my eyelashes, but I do think it gave me a few more hairs in my eyebrows. Using the castor oil every day religiously didn’t have super dramatic results; I don’t have anything close to Cara Delevingne brows, but my sparse spot does appear to be a bit less noticeable.

That being said, I still use the SheaMoisture’s 100% Pure Jamaican Black Castor Oil every night. Why? It works wonders on my skin and the edges of my hairline! When I wasn’t seeing results fast enough in the hair growth department on my brows and lashes, I started experimenting with using the castor oil other places. First, I just started massaging it in the areas around my eyes. Then, I started using it all over my face at night before bed. The result? Super soft, smooth skin! Worth noting: a little goes a long way because castor oil is thick. Whenever my skin is feeling dry, I just rub one drop between my hands then press it into my face. It makes my skin look and feel amazing.

I also really like using SheaMoisture’s 100% Pure Jamaican Black Castor Oil on my edges (aka my hairline). That’s usually an area I miss when applying leave-in conditioner after I wash my hair, but the castor oil keeps them hydrated, so there’s less risk of breakage. It’s a bit too heavy to use every night, so instead I apply it to my hairline 2-3 times per week and let me say, my edges are thriving!

So while I can’t say with absolute certainty that castor oil will give you amazingly thick brows and lashes, I can definitely tell you that it’s worth having a bottle of SheaMoisture’s 100% Pure Jamaican Black Castor Oil in your beauty cabinet. Not only is it a natural way to make your skin look and feel dewy and bright, but it also hydrates your hair and adds shine. Talk about a beauty multi-tasker!
