There’s A New Body Type–Muscular–And Already A Pair Of Jeans For It

September 16, 2013 by Tracey Wallace

Why is it that when we start talking body types and “athletic” is brought up, we get told that the athletic shape just means skinny and narrow? Worse, it is often used interchangeably with “boyish” or “straight.” But if you know anything about working out and the body type that comes with it, straight up and down or lacking curves (AKA boyish) is not at all what comes to mind. An athletic body shape is generally larger in the thigh and glutes region and thinner at the waist (seriously, I just described Kim Kardashian. How is that boyish?).

So when a new “best jeans for your body type article” hits the interwebs, there is generally one body type that goes unaddressed: it’s the soul-cycling-like-a-champ, rowing-like-your-life-depends-on-it, dedicated-to-looking-like-a-Kardashian type. But, red flag, there aren’t actually jeans that fit this body type, unless you have a vast amount of cash and a good designer friend who can whip you up a unique pair.

Let’s be honest, a pair of jeans that fits at the thigh and around the glutes will, 99 percent of the time, be too loose at the hips and if something doesn’t fit correctly, well, there goes any chance of it looking stylish. Turns out that the more athletic you actually are, the less the jeans industry thinks you exist, which is why it takes a fashion kickstarter to address the problem.

Meet COCABANG, a start-up fashion company from Austin, Texas hoping to raise enough money on Kickstarter to produce a line of high-quality, fashionable skinny jeans for the athletic woman who lives in what they dub the “Fit Generation.”

What is the Fit Generation, you ask? Well, it’s the millennial group of women out there who sign up for every 5K, never miss a kickboxing class, think the new rowing trend is going to give them killer arms (in a crazy good way!), and who post photos of their amazing bods and inspirational finishes on social media. Those women are fit. Those women are athletic. But most importantly, those women are no longer a sub-genre of potential buyers. Instead, they have taken over cycling classes, made kale a thing, and are now looking for jeans that hug those toned curves they worked so hard to get.

And COCABANG is rising to the challenge. Check out their video below to get more info and donate to the cause, even if you aren’t a proud member of the Fit Generation. At the very least, this a step in the right direction for creating clothes for real women with real bodies. And that’s a trend everyone can support.
