Recently, a male friend of mine – who’d just survived shopping with his girlfriend – remarked, “Jeans have become such a commodity. They cost, like, 150 bucks! When did that happen?!” I didn’t have an answer. But at some point lovers of Levi’s converted to True Religion, and Gap jeans gave way to the 7s and Citizens of the denim world. They’re corona-of-the-sun hot for the moment, like this Gap is hastening a change by offering three fit styles at reasonable prices: Curvy (for hourglass figures), Straight (for less voluptuous bodies) and Original (for the in-betweens). Yes, embellished denim is still in style and denim and fur will be fall must-haves (to quote my own blog entries), but I foresee other brands following Gap’s lead and cool dungarees will again be consumable by the masses. I don’t know when, but I do know it’s coming.
