Wash Up Without Water: Portable Hand Refreshers For Your Purse

February 25, 2008 by Rebekah

The post-work, pre-party stitch is about as ubiquitous as they come: in the back of a cab, sans sink, digging for lip gloss with keyboard-contaminated hands that feel, well, kind of grimy. We love the idea of being able to wash our hands even when we can't get to a water source, but we're especially keen on this handy incarnation – individual packets of dirt-destroying formula that you can toss after one or two uses. Hardly anything extra to carry, no messy bag spills, and if you're in a multitasking mood, they also work as a quick post-gym refresher on underarms or face.

Hip: Dirty Girl and Wash Away Your Sins Towelettes ($0.99 each)About as cool as antibacterial towelettes are going to get, these come in adorably kitschy '50s-inspired packets, and the actual wipes are soft and clothlike. Post-wipedown, hands are silky and lightly scented. Classic: Wet Ones Singles Antibacterial Moist Wipes ($2.79 for 24)These wipes have long been the after-snacktime ally of clean-clothed moms, and for good reason. Cheap and utilitarian, they're not particularly memorable but they'll get the job done. Try leaving a box at your desk or plant a few in each handbag.

Zen: Jao Hand Refresher ($7, in Flight Mini-Rescue Pack)

This gel has been heralded by pros as a makeup bag must-have. Essential oils act as antiseptics, help keep hands soft, and impart a soothing scent.
