Would You Pay $1,500 For A Fake Designer Handbag?

December 26, 2013 by Sara Alderman

Sure, we love a good designer lookalike, but the whole point of the two items looking slightly different is that one costs 10 times more than the other. Also, it’s usually pretty easy to spot the real from the fake–but not anymore. Meet: The Superfake. The designer knock-off bag that is almost identical to the original, including the price. You know those fakes you can buy off the streets? Those cost anywhere between $25-$50. But superfakes range in price from $500-$1,500, and you need special permission to see them. They aren’t just available for any gal to scoop up on the sidewalk.

As if things couldn’t get worse (like now we won’t be able to tell if our girlfiend’s Birkin is fake), even experts are having a hard time figuring out what is real. Any person can just look at a ‘street’ fake and see that the designer stamp is misspelled, or the interior lining isn’t authentic. But superfakes are making it that much harder for everybody, even the pros. Bargain Fever author Mark Ellwood told ABC News, “The term ‘superfake’ was coined because essentially this fake is better than you could believe. Hand a fake handbag to an expert in bags and say, ‘Is this real or not?’ They might not be able to tell.” Why should we spend almost the same amount for something that is fake? Would spend $1,500 on a superfake? Let us know in the comments below!
