As anyone who has ever had their phone hacked can tell you, using a smartphone is not without a few risks. Hackers can infiltrate your device and gain access to your personal data, it’s true. But the more vulnerable you make yourself, the easier that becomes. Don’t hand anyone the key to your data. Instead, take a few smart steps to beef up your phone security, starting with these three iPhone settings that security experts say you should always have turned off to keep your personal data safe.

Automatic Wi-Fi connections

iPhones are made to instantly connect to known Wi-Fi networks when they are in range. Although this feature can be helpful, Cybersecurity Expert Vladimir Fomenko, the director and founder of Infatica, says it also puts the system and your personal information at risk. “For example, hackers can make fake Wi-Fi networks with the same name as real ones,” Fomenko says. “If your device connects to these counterfeit networks, hackers can access your data. By turning off automatic Wi-Fi connections, you can prevent your device from connecting to these artificial networks, enabling you to check reliable Wi-Fi networks manually.”

Bluetooth connections

“Hackers can also use Bluetooth to get into your device and see your personal information,” Fomenko shares. “Hackers can send you malicious files or malware on your device using Bluetooth.. To avoid this, it is best to turn off Bluetooth links when you are not using them.”

Automatic app updates

By default, your iPhone will update your apps in the background without you having to do anything, Fomenko says. “This can be helpful but also put your safety at risk,” he says. One example that Fomenko provides is that app updates can sometimes bring new security holes or include malicious code, making your device less safe. By disabling auto-updates, you can examine each update before installing it, giving you greater control over your device’s security.

“Turning off these settings can help protect your personal information by limiting the data collected about you and your device,” Fomenko says. “It’s important to remember that turning off these settings could make some apps or services less valuable, so weigh the risks and benefits before making any changes. As always, it’s essential to stay aware and take steps to keep your privacy and safety online safe.”
