“New year, new me” — that’s the mantra, right? If you’re planning to revamp yourself and your health this year, there are a few bad habits from 2019 that most of us should break ASAP. The most common one is sugary drinks. Most people have already learned that adding excess sugar into your diet can cause weight gain, slower metabolisms and decreased energy, and sugary drinks are the main culprits in this.

Ideally, we should all cut out every sugary drink from our diets and opt for sparkling water with a squeeze of lemon to curb our cravings, but it’s best to start small. Right now, there are four drinks that we should all stop drinking for 2020.

Soda

The most obvious drink to cut out of your routine is soda. A single can of Coca-Cola contains 39 grams of sugar - which is your complete daily recommended intake of sugar. So unless you make sure not to eat anything else with any traces of sugar for the rest of the day, drinking a can of coke will put you over your limit.

Energy Drinks

Even worse than soda, energy drinks can wreak havoc on your health altogether. They have around 27 grams of sugar per serving, but this isn’t even the worst part to these drinks. They contain a lot of caffeine, that when combined with sugar, affects your health negatively. Some energy drinks have even been found to cause high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats and impaired blood vessel function.

Bottled Iced Tea

Most people consider iced tea a much healthier alternative to other soft beverages, but in reality the only way to make this true is if you brew the tea yourself and add natural sweeteners. If you buy a bottle of iced tea, you are actually filling yourself up with just about the same amount of sugar that is found in soda. A bottle of Pure Leaf Iced Sweet Tea has 42 grams of sugar - which is more than a can of Coke and more than you should have in a day.

Premade Coffee Drinks

While picking up a package of premade Starbucks or Dunkin drinks to grab and go each morning might seem like a great way to simplify your routine, it is actually one of the worst choices you can make for your health. A bottled Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino coffee drink contains 31 grams of sugar and 27 calories from fat. The best way to get your caffeine fix on the go is to just make a cup of coffee yourself and keep it in a to-go mug.
