6 Aging & Flattening Haircuts Experts Want You To Stop Getting Because They Add Years To Your Face

If one of your priorities when you get your next haircut is to ensure it makes you look fresh, youthful, and makes the most of your facial features and face shape, it helps to stay clear of styles that are known to age you. An aging haircut is one that leaves your hair flat and looking lifeless. It lacks movement, vitality, and a clear style that works for you. And, not surprisingly, the same few haircuts always seem to pop up when aging haircuts are discussed.

It’s important to consider your hair type and personal needs before automatically disregarding one of these five haircuts. What works for one person may not work for another (for example, there is no one perfect length for everyone. Some have thicker hair that can handle more length than others). According to many hairstylists, these five haircuts can be aging, flattening, and add years to the face.

1. Getting a Trim When You Need a Haircut

“Just a trim.” Do those words sound familiar? Getting your hair cut when you have long hair can feel traumatic and scary, especially if you’ve always had long hair. You may cling to long hair as a security blanket without realizing the extra length can make thin hair look straggly and not add style and oomph to your look. Being honest with yourself (and finding a stylist who is honest with you) can help you find the haircut that will truly make a difference — and that may mean cutting off more than half an inch (we get it).

2. Harsh Geometric Bobs

Geometric bobs with sharp lines can look chic and interesting. However, they can also appear squarish and give your face a boxier look. Softer angles can work better on your face if your goal is to soften your overall look.

3. Blunt Bobs

This one is bound to gain some frowns — because blunt bobs can be one of the chicest haircuts on the planet — but hear us out. There’s a major caveat with getting a blunt bob: you should have just enough density to your hair that it doesn’t fall flat on top. If your blunt bob looks weighed down, it might be because adding a few layers will be more beneficial.

4. Too Many Layers

Layers can add so much to your hair — mainly volume and movement. But layers aren’t the cure for everything, and too many of them (especially when you’re starting out with thin hair) can make your hair look wispy and fragile. Unless this is the look you’re going for, only place strategic layers in your hair and avoid overdoing it.

5. Not Addressing Hair Color

A great haircut that neglects hair color can fall short. This doesn’t mean you have to cover your grays or get some specific shade of blonde. What it means is making sure the tones in your hair, whether they are warm, cool, or neutral, are compatible with your skin tone and make you look healthy and radiant.
