On August 8, 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a voluntary recall of a specific batch of baby formula sold at H-E-B and CVS stores across multiple states. The recall affects three lots within one batch, totaling 16,500 cans of Premium Infant Formula with Iron Milk-Based Powder.
The reason for the recall? The formula was found to contain vitamin D levels that exceed the maximum allowable limit, posing potential health risks to infants. Find all of the details—including what to do if you’ve purchased this recalled formula—below.
Baby Formula Recall
According to the FDA’s recall notice, the affected baby formula was shipped to H-E-B Grocery Company, LP in Texas, and to CVS stores in Texas, Florida, California, South Carolina, Virginia, Indiana, Tennessee, New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Missouri. The recall was initiated by Perrigo Company plc, the manufacturer of the formula, after routine testing revealed the elevated levels of vitamin D.
In a statement, the FDA explained, "The recalled product was shipped to H-E-B Grocery Company, LP in TX; and CVS in the following states: TX, FL, CA, SC, VA, IN, TN, NJ, MI, PA, RI, MO. No other products or retailers are impacted by this recall."
Health Risks Associated with Excessive Vitamin D
Vitamin D is essential for infant health, particularly for the development of strong bones. However, excessive vitamin D can lead to potential health issues. While the short-term consumption of the affected formula is unlikely to pose a significant risk for most infants, the FDA warned that "in a small subset of physiologically vulnerable infants (e.g., impaired renal function), there is the potential that consumption of the recalled product could result in health complications."
To date, there have been no reports of harm linked to the recalled formula. However, parents and caregivers are urged to check the lot codes and "use by" dates at the bottom of the package to determine if they have purchased the affected product.
Affected Lot Codes and "Use By" Dates
The FDA provided the following details for the recalled lot codes:
- CVS Stores (Shipped Beginning February 6, 2024)
- Lot Code: T11LMYC
- Use By Date: November 11, 2025
- Material: 975261

Perrigo has already notified H-E-B and CVS directly, asking them to examine their retail and warehouse inventory and isolate the affected product. The FDA advises parents and caregivers to contact their healthcare provider if they have any concerns about the formula they may have purchased.
What Should You Do if You Have the Recalled Formula?
If you are in possession of the recalled baby formula, the FDA advises the following steps:
- Check the Lot Code and Use By Date: Look at the bottom of the package for the lot code and use by date. If they match any of the recalled codes, discontinue use immediately.
- Contact Your Healthcare Provider: If your infant has consumed the recalled formula and you have concerns about their health, reach out to your healthcare provider for advice.
- Report Any Adverse Events: If your infant experiences any symptoms, report them to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online at www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm.
- Contact Perrigo Consumer Affairs: For any questions or concerns, Perrigo Consumer Affairs can be reached at 1-800-538-9543, Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.
While the recall of this baby formula may be concerning, it’s important to note that the risk to most infants is low. However, parents and caregivers should remain vigilant, checking lot codes and consulting with healthcare providers to ensure the safety and well-being of their infants. The FDA and Perrigo are working to ensure that the affected products are removed from shelves to prevent any potential health risks.
