Experts Share 3 Supplements Worth The Money For Supporting Heart Health After 50: CoQ10, More

As we get older, maintaining heart health becomes increasingly important. Cardiologists say that after age 50, natural changes in metabolism, circulation, and blood pressure can increase the risk of cardiovascular issues. While a balanced diet, exercise, and regular medical checkups remain the foundation of heart care, certain supplements may also help support cardiovascular function.

Experts note that some nutrients play especially important roles in circulation, blood vessel health, and energy production, all of which are key for keeping the heart functioning properly. According to medical professionals, a few supplements stand out as particularly beneficial for adults in midlife and beyond.

Here are three that experts say may be worth considering.

1. Magnesium

Health experts have long recognized magnesium as an essential mineral because it supports hundreds of processes in the body. “Its importance only increases with age,” says Registered Dietitian Kaitlyn Comeau.

“For adults over 40, magnesium can help regulate blood pressure, improve circulation by supporting vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels), and calm the nervous system, which may reduce stress-related inflammation.”

In addition to cardiovascular benefits, Magnesium can also help relax muscles throughout the body. Doctors explain that magnesium acts as a natural “muscle relaxer,” meaning people who experience muscle pain or cramping may benefit from adding it to their daily routine.

2. CoQ10

Another supplement often recommended for heart health is Coenzyme Q10, commonly called CoQ10.

Dr. Jason Winkelmann, a Naturopathic Doctor and Chronic Pain Specialist with True Health Centers, describes it as a nutrient that “supports energy production in the body and fights muscle fatigue associated with statin medications for high cholesterol.”

Statins—medications often prescribed to lower cholesterol—can sometimes reduce the body’s natural CoQ10 levels.

Comeau notes that supplementing with CoQ10 may help fill that gap. “For people over 50, supplementing with CoQ10 may support healthy blood pressure, enhance circulation, and improve energy levels, especially for those taking statin medications, which can deplete CoQ10,” she explains.

3. Fish Oil (Omega-3s)

Fish oil supplements have been a staple for heart health for decades, and for good reason. They contain omega-3 fatty acids, which research has linked to multiple cardiovascular benefits.

Omega-3 fatty acids help support heart health in several ways.

Comeau explains that these nutrients “reduce inflammation, improve the lining of the blood vessels, and may help lower triglyceride levels.” In addition to supporting the heart, omega-3s also benefit other areas of the body.

“Omega-3s also support joint mobility and brain health, making them a foundational supplement for anyone navigating midlife and beyond,” she adds.

The Bottom line

Heart health becomes increasingly important with age, and experts say certain supplements may provide extra support alongside a healthy lifestyle. Nutrients like magnesium, CoQ10, and omega-3 fatty acids may help improve circulation, support blood pressure, and reduce inflammation—key factors for maintaining cardiovascular health after 50.

However, doctors recommend speaking with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially if you take medications or have existing health conditions.
