Your iPhone isn’t just a necessity, it’s an investment. Carrying around an expensive iPhone and using it for everything under the sun can sometimes make us take for granted the fact that it is a costly device to replace, and that we could be making innocent mistakes that add up to a fortune in repairs. Thankfully, knowledge is power and the first step to saving money and your device is to be aware of the biggest iPhone mistake you can make — one that can cost you hundreds of dollars. Tech Expert David Lynch, content lead for UpPhone, shares tips on how to prolong the life of your phone.

You take your smartphone everywhere. And since you probably aren’t checking out the weather report and choosing to leave your device home when temperatures soar or plummet, it’s crucial to keep in mind that how you tend to your device in extreme temperatures matters. According to Apple, the preferred operating iOS temperature is between 32 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit. So what happens when you use your phone in temps that exceed this limit?

Cold temperatures aren’t as much of a concern as hot temps — and Apple even reminds us that your phone can stay safe in temperatures as low as minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit. But extreme heat IS a much greater concern.

“Leaving your iPhone in a hot environment — like in your car on a summer day — can cause a lot of problems and shorten the lifespan of your iPhone,” Lynch says. “According to Apple, exposing your iPhone to temperatures greater than 113º Fahrenheit can ‘change performance and behavior.’”

Remember: even if the temperature outside is a balmy 75 degrees Fahrenheit, temps can really soar inside of cars. If you leave your phone in your car for a long period of time, even if you’re just popping out to the grocery store, it may damage your device.

Another major issue that Lynch says he confronts is insufficient cleaning. “Not cleaning out iPhone ports: It's easy for lint, dirt, and other debris to get stuck in the ports on your iPhone, like the headphone jack or charging port,” Lynch says. “A clogged port can leave your iPhone stuck in headphones mode or prevent it from charging. Regularly cleaning out the headphone jack or charging port with an anti-static brush or a brand new toothbrush will keep your iPhone running well.”

A better cleaning routine and minding the temperature of your device can make a huge difference in the longevity of your smartphone.
