Burger King patrons are responding to a recent Reddit post where one user described being billed $4.89 for a soda. While the original poster didn’t indicate which size soda they chose, Burger King’s website indicates that a “value size” soft drink tends to be around $1.79, a small often comes to $2.59, a medium is usually $2.99 and a large can be $3.39.

Numerous commenters in the thread are criticizing the chain for what they perceive as “rising prices” and “upcharging.”

As the original uploader in r/Burger King thread wrote: “Soda Rip off Greed-flation. $4.89 for a Soda. What’s wrong with these people.” Fellow Redditors headed to the comments to share their thoughts.

Burger King Fans React After A Customer On Reddit Says They Were Charged $4.89 For A Soda

One user wrote: "Thats 2.2 liters easy" as another added: "That’s one thing I give props to McDonald’s for, $1.29 for any normal fountain drinks." Someone else replied: "They're $1 at 7/11 right now." While prices of sodas at the chain can vary by location, another Redditor shared a similar experience of being billed around $4 for a fountain beverage in a similar thread.

"Ridiculous Prices! - $4 SODA," they wrote, adding: "I rarely go to BK but was around one and decided to get a drink. A medium soda cost $3.93 with tax. This is sick!! I’m in NJ by the way." They continued: "Totally would have gone to McDonald’s and paid $1.50 but there wasn’t one nearby."

Someone in the thread responded: "Always check pricing before ordering anywhere. I always use the app, that way I see what items cost. If it’s too high, I just remove the item. You can always bring a drink from home to save a lot of money." One other added: "Disgusting. I could have gotten two 2 liters for that price."

Fast food costs have been climbing consistently over the years, and it appears that some patrons have reached their limit. Business Insider reports that recent statistics indicate consumers are growing tired of high prices and are opting to eat out less often as a result.

Based on pricing information gathered by FinanceBuzz, “[Burger King] has done a much better job of keeping costs down compared to McDonald’s. While prices at the Golden Arches have doubled on average since 2014, the average cost for Burger King menu items has risen by ‘just’ 55% in that same time.”

Nevertheless, the same report indicates that the price of a Whopper meal has increased by 73%, rising from $5.79 in 2014 to $9.99 in 2024.
