How secure is your iPhone? If you ask most people they might say, “secure enough … I think.” And that’s because the assumption may be that you phone is by your side for most of the day, so unless it falls into the wrong hands, or you’re downloading questionable apps or clicking on strange links, you should be good to go.

But there’s one security setting that you may not even know exists that can play a role in your phone’s security.

According to the experts at All Things Secured, this is the one security setting that you should change to protect your data.

Turn On Advanced Data Protection

Apple now has an end-to-end encryption feature that ensures not even Apple know the data that you are sending and receiving, but in order to enable it, you have to turn on Advanced Data Protection.

The reason this isn’t a default for all Apple devices is because, even thought it’s better security, it’s also greater responsibility. Apple recognizes that not everyone wants the responsibility of encrypted data.

Go to Settings and click on your name. Find iCloud settings and scroll down to Advanced Data Protection. If this setting is not available on your device, this means that your software has not been updated. In that case, make sure you first update your software to the latest before you proceed. Once that is updated, click on Advanced Data Protection to enable it. From here, Apple may has you to jump through a few hoops to set it up.

Other steps you should take to beef up your iPhone’s security include: setting up a strong password to get into your phone, setting up a recovery contact (someone you trust), and setting up Two-Factor Authentication as an added security step to protect your data.
