Charging your phone seems like it should be the simplest task, but it’s important to avoid making common mistakes that can lead your battery down a bad path. While it may seem like charging your device to 100 percent is the best course of action — 100 percent provides assurance that your phone will stay charged for longer, so what could be wrong with that? It actually isn’t a good common practice, according to many tech experts.
There is very little reason why you should charge your phone to 100 percent, according to experts. Here’s what can go wrong when you continue to keep your phone on a charging cable for hours (and hours).
Battery Strain
High voltage charging can put a strain on your battery and cause it to wear out sooner, according to experts. When your lithium-ion battery is charged to 100 percent and stays there for some time, the voltage inside of the battery reaches its maximum limit and this additional stress that it places on the battery can lead it to degrade over time. Your phone’s battery is also vulnerable to extreme temperatures. The stress on its battery causes it to heat up, which is also a bit like a death sentence to your battery.
Keep Your Charge Between 30 and 80 Percent
To help your battery go the distance, avoid charging it to 100 percent and keep it charged instead between 30 and 80 percent, which is known as the sweet spot. You can also avoid allowing your phone to drop to zero percent charge and enable the Optimized Battery Charging feature when possible. This feature learns your charging habit so that it trickles a charge slowly when your phone is on its charger, keeping it from staying at 100 percent for too long.
