Customers often critique and discuss Costco items on Reddit, and in a new thread this month, many are taking a closer look at Kirkland fish offered in stores from the wholesale retailer.
On May 17th, one user @onedollarjuana wrote, “Kirkland Signature Wild Pacific Mahi-Mahi, Boneless Skinless, 3 lbs, Item 251704, comes from a fishery (Ecuador) that is specified as “AVOID” on the Seafood Watch website.”
The user added, “This means that Costco is directly contributing to the demise of Mahi Mahi in that area of the ocean.”
Should Costco Sell Mahi-Mahi Fish? Customers On Reddit Are Divided
The thread began garnering hundreds of comments from fellow Costco shoppers. Another wrote, "Let’s not distract the already confused public about what labels mean, or the state and practices of fisheries, from the real simple call to action here- don’t buy it."
They added, "Yes, you are correct that the type of fishing and bycatch is the problem. Posts like this are super valuable for the public facing sustainability message."
Another chimed in, writing, "Costco's fish game has gone seriously downhill." They continued, "Their Atlantic farm-raised salmon used to be sourced from Norway and now it is sourced from Chile and it's almost all the tail sections."
On the official Costco site, this Mahi Mahi product is priced at $35.99, or $12.00 per pound. It is described as "boneless, skinless wild pacific mahi-mahi" and it comes in "center cut portions, 4-8 oz each." It is "individually vacuum-packed, quick frozen," and in a "3 lb resealable bag."
One other Reddit user wrote in the thread, urging the creator to contact the company: "Please submit the complaint to Costco HQ too so they can know about it." We're sure more info is to come, so we're keeping an eye out!
In the past month, customers on Reddit have also complained about the quality of Costco's lettuce and tomatoes, and also slammed the $19 price of the chain's new bakery item, the viral Four Berry Pie.
