The company announced via release that it is the first U.S. retailer to allow customers to pay with touch-free PayPal and Venmo QR codes. This is huge news amid the nation’s deadliest second wave of COVID-19 cases.

The company announced their plans for the revolutionary contactless payment implementation back in July, and as of today, November 16th, they are fully rolled out in all 8,200 stores nationwide.

The QR codes allow customers to securely pay for their items without needing to touch a keypad or a receipt.

As cases of the novel coronavirus surge across the U.S., touch-free payment at grocery stores and pharmacy chains has become increasingly important.

This year, CVS has seen a 43% increase in touch-free transactions, and a study from PayPal shows that 57% of consumers surveyed said merchants’ digital payment offerings impact their willingness to shop in that store. More than a third of participants, or 34%, said they would NOT buy from a store if QR code payment was not available. Wow!

“Putting our customer’s safety at the forefront of our innovations, we’ve focused resources on finding new ways to make customers’ lives easier and more convenient,” said Jon Roberts, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at CVS Health in the letter. “Introducing more digital options, including touch-free payments at the register, is in step with changing consumer preferences.”

For customers that don't have existing PayPal or Venmo accounts, they can sign up and link their preferred payment method in minutes.

“The launch of PayPal and Venmo QR codes in CVS Pharmacy stores will not only provide health-conscious customers with a touch-free way to pay at checkout, but also brings the safety and security of PayPal and Venmo transactions into the store with shoppers,” said Jeremy Jonker, Senior Vice President Head of Consumer In-Store and Digital Commerce, PayPal.

“We are thrilled that PayPal and Venmo QR codes will help to maintain the safety of CVS customers and employees, especially in the essential pharmacy retail environment as we go into the winter months.”

How to use it: open the PayPal or Venmo mobile app on your smart phone, click "Scan," and select "Show to Pay." With Venmo QR codes, customers can pay using their stored Venmo payment options (Venmo balance, bank account, credit card, etc.). PayPal doesn't charge fees to the customer when paying with PayPal or Venmo QR codes, and you can even access your ExtraCare deals through the checkout process.

CVS Pharmacy has also rolled out at-home delivery services, partnerships with InstaCart and DoorDash, and new features to the CVS mobile app this year amid the pandemic.
