If a stalling iPhone has got you frustrated, it’s time to take charge. You can’t control everything about your phone, and it’s true that an older device may become slower and lose battery power faster. But not everything is due to age, and there are settings that you can manipulate to help bring your phone up to speed.

Before you spend more money on a new battery or a new iPhone, try changing these two settings that can help make your iPhone run faster and more efficiently.

Reduce Motion and Visual Effects

The visual motion setting on your iPhone is a nice perk. It allows you to enjoy the movement of some screen elements such as wallpapers, screen transitions, Siri alerts, and even animated full-screen and bubble effects in the Messages app.

It’s a cool feature, that’s for sure, but is it necessary? Not if it’s causing your phone to slow down and work less at half the speed.

You can turn off Motion by heading to Settings > Accessibility > Motion.

Delete or Offload Apps

When was the last time you took a good, hard look at the apps on your device and made some difficult choices about which ones no longer serve you?

Some older apps that you have not used and haven’t updated in ages could be taking up valuable storage space, which slows down your device. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage as a first step to review your list of apps and find out how much storage each one consumes. If you see apps on this list that are taking up considerable storage (or any storage, really, given the fact that you don’t even use them), either offload the app or delete it altogether.

If you choose to offload the app because you aren’t sure you won’t want to use it at a later date, your phone will keep its data but will free up storage space by removing the app from your device.
