Home cooking can be much healthier than ordering in or going out to restaurants because you have full control of the ingredients that go into your food. You can substitute items for healthier choices that are more beneficial to your metabolism and better for your health. But there is one seemingly healthy cooking ingredient that many people are using, that isn’t actually as good for you as you would think.

As almost every recipe requires a cooking fat - usually butter or oil - it is very common to substitute those with certain options for those with a lower fat content. This is why many people will often choose to cook with canola oil instead of butter.

But the truth is that canola oil isn’t actually that good for you. It actually has two grams more fat per tablespoon than butter, plus it is processed in a way that makes it even worse for your health.

When the seeds that go into canola oil are processed, artificial trans fats are created. This type of fat is bad for your health because it raises the levels of bad cholesterol and lowers the levels of good cholesterol in your body. Plus, canola oil is very low in any beneficial vitamins or nutrients.

Instead of cooking with canola oil, try using olive oil or butter. These fats are more naturally produced and can also add more flavor into the foods you cook.
