You may already be well aware of the importance of backing up your phone on occasion so that all of your files and data are safe and sound, even if your phone, let’s say, crashes and loses everything important. But what, exactly, does that mean in terms of how often you should take time out of your day and back up your device? The truth is: you may not be taking this important step often enough. Here’s how often you should actually be backing up your iPhone, accord to tech experts.

Every Single Day

To avoid losing essential items and having your iPhone upgraded, backing it up daily would be the way to go, advises Tech Expert Stephen Curry, CEO of CocoSign. “Although through iCloud, iPhone tends to backup automatically whenever connected to a powered charge cable, you need to backup manually for assurance,” Curry says.

You may be wondering what are some signs to look for that indicate it’s time to back up your phone. That answer isn’t so clear — but trust your gut when it comes to preserving specific items on your phone. “In my opinion, I have some of the most important stuff saved in my iPhone, and it is unthinkable to lose it all suddenly,” Curry says. “I know that it is time to back up each time I see the phone misbehaving. For example, it repeatedly restarts itself, keeps losing the network, and has slow speeds to process simple things like iMessage.”

Curry says there are several reasons why it’s important to back up your phone, including:

*Saving and transferring data to a new device is made easier

*Avoids loss of important information in case your iPhone crashes

*Increase running speeds of the device

*Increase data transparency and ownership

“I have two methods of backing up my iPhone,” Curry says. “Every month, I do offline backup by connecting the phone to a laptop to save all my data on an external drive. Also, I use the iCloud Backup feature to automatically back up my iPhone’s data when the device is connected to WiFi. If I have something urgent to back up, I execute a manual backup using the Back Up Now feature on the iPhone.”

In a nutshell: getting into a habit of backing up your phone far more often can only lead to positive outcomes (and can preserve your precious data).
