If you’re a coffee lover, there are few ingredients you would consider adding, other than maybe a spoonful of sugar, milk, and milk froth, that can turn your cup from amazing to even more incredible.

But the latest coffee trend isn’t just delicious — some experts say it can boost your metabolism, increase your energy levels, and help you lose weight.

There is one catch–you’ll need a blender. Okay, two catches–this metabolism-boosting ingredient may be the absolute last you’d ever want to add to your coffee. But trust everyone in Silicon Valley: it’s more energizing than five cups of espresso.

Add Butter To Your Coffee

It has a catchy name — Bulletproof Coffee — and a few unorthodox ingredients that share nothing in common with sugar. Bulletproof coffee creator Dave Asprey, who is also a computer whiz, discovered the benefits of adding grass-fed butter to his coffee while traveling through Tibet and realizing that consuming butter gave him tons of energy and prevented him from feeling altitude sickness, according to Fast Company. Since he was a fan of coffee, he got creative with his coffee recipe and came up with one filled with fat — and that's a good thing.

To make Bulletproof Coffee, you add two tablespoons of unsalted butter and one to two tablespoons of medium-chain triglyceride oil to your coffee and blend well (mixing with a spoon isn't going to cut it). The coffee drink has a ton of calories and fat, but Asprey credits it with helping him lose 100 pounds.

The Benefits — And One Caveat — Of Drinking Bulletproof Coffee

One of the benefits of drinking Bulletproof Coffee is that the fat content can be used as fuel instead of stored in the liver as fat — and that helps boost your metabolism and provides you with long-lasting energy.

Amy Shapiro, a registered dietitian from New York City, told Well + Good that Bulletproof Coffee "can be a satisfying, energy-producing breakfast that provides many nutrients, satisfies hunger, and may cause your body to increase fat-burning, resulting in weight loss."

With that said, Shapiro also pointed out that consuming that many calories and grams of fat are most beneficial if the rest of your day's diet is low in carbs. If you are eating a diet that is relatively high in carbs and enjoying a Bulletproof Coffee in the morning, it could have the opposite effect and cause you to gain weight and feel sluggish.

If all else checks out and you're curious about how your morning coffee can boost your metabolism, trade sugar and milk for a few pats of butter.
