If your iPhone is struggling to maintain a charge for longer than a few hours, the problem may not actually be your phone. Everything from your charging habits to the apps that you use can play a major role in killing that battery power. Before you head off to the Apple store or shell out money on a new battery, try making a few changes that are simpler (and less costly). Here’s why your iPhone battery is dying so quickly, according to tech experts — and ways you can solve the problem right away.

Your Charging Habits

The first place to turn your attention when you are experiencing iPhone battery drainage is your charging habits.

“If your iPhone battery can’t last through a full day with charge, you may as well start relooking at how you charge your iPhone, the charger used, and how often you charge the phone,” says Alina Clark, co-founder of CocoDoc. “Using the original branded iPhone charger maintains the health of your battery. While at it, one should also consider keeping your charge between 15% on the low end, and 90% on the high end. Letting your charge capacity drop too low, or charging to the high extremes decimates your battery life.  Also, keeping your iPhone perpetually connected to the charger will end up killing the battery.”

If you are devoted to a daily charging habit that you consider pretty healthy, the problem may lie elsewhere.

Background apps

“Apps that require a routinely run in the background will drain your battery life fast,” Clark says. “Restricting background apps like Facebook, or your location apps will definitely give you longer battery life. Also, apps that claim to help you ‘save battery’ should be a no-go zone. iPhone's own settings are adequate to maintain your battery. Any software that claims to work miracles on your battery life is most likely a well packaged scam.”

Apps like the Facebook app or Snapchat will always deplete battery power faster. But before you delete an app you love, try changing your charging habits and addressing background apps to see if that makes a major difference.
