Why is your phone so darn slow?

That’s the burning question that more than a few iPhone users ask themselves every day. And the answer you’ll often get has to do with your storage space — namely, how much of it you’ve consumed already and how that alone is stalling your device. Experts may advise you to start deleting big files that you no longer need or photos and videos — and, in some cases, even apps like Facebook and Snapchat. That’s all good advice, but what happens after you’ve done all of that and you’re still at your wit’s end with a slow phone?

Irene Graham, co-founder of Spylix, says these are the four reasons why your iPhone is so slow that don’t have a single thing to do with storage.

Outdated software

Your iPhone’s software might be out-of-date if it loads or operates slowly,” Graham said. “You must check for updates before determining whether the software is to blame for your phone’s performance issues. Follow the steps below to accomplish this.

Go to General > Settings.

Select Software Updates from the General tab.

The message on your screen will indicate whether the software on your iPhone is current. If it isn’t, you must click the button to download the most recent iOS version.”

The possibility of malware

Although unlikely, Graham said it is still possible for your iPhone to acquire malware — especially if you jailbreak it. “Checking for malware is a good idea if your iPhone is sluggish,” Graham advised.

Potential background energy use by apps

“One advantage of running apps in the background is that you can access them more quickly,” Graham said. “You don’t need to worry about closing iPhone apps because they typically don’t consume any power in the background. However, it may still consume energy in the background and slow down your iPhone if an app has a bug or becomes stuck in a loop. Quitting all the apps on your device is the only way to fix this.”

Your phone might require a reboot

Good news: the reason for your phone’s delay could have the simplest solution of all: it needs a little reboot here and there. It’s critical to remember that phones occasionally require a break,” Graham said. “Your iPhone operates continuously when you use a device for several hours each day and immediately charge it at night. The performance of your phone could be impacted over time by this usage. Even though you might not initially link your phone’s poor performance to insufficient sleep, you should consider it.”

If your phone is super slow, look into these four potential culprits (that have nothing to do with storage).
