Snacking is an integral part of our daily routine, providing moments of pleasure and sustenance between meals. However, when it comes to achieving weight loss goals, choosing the right snacks becomes crucial. The relationship between snacks and weight loss is a dynamic one, as mindful snacking can contribute to a balanced and effective weight management strategy. In the pursuit of a healthier lifestyle, incorporating low-calorie weight-loss friendly snacks can make a significant difference. These snacks not only satiate your cravings but also support your weight loss journey by providing essential nutrients without compromising on flavor.

We spoke with Irene Mejia, RDN, CPT, to learn about one low-calorie, weight loss-friendly snack you can add into your routine to keep that number on the scale in check while indulging in a nutritious and tasty snack. Mejia revealed that saltine crackers with feta cheese is a great choice in this case!

Saltine Crackers With Feta Cheese

Saltine crackers paired with feta cheese create a delectable and satisfying snack that is not only delicious but also fits well into a low-calorie, weight-loss-friendly diet. The crispiness of saltine crackers provides a satisfying texture, while the rich and tangy flavor of feta cheese adds a delightful contrast. The combination offers a balance of carbohydrates and protein, helping to keep you satiated between meals. Furthermore, this snack is a lower calorie option compared to many other choices, making it a smart and mindful choice for those aiming to manage their weight.

Mejia goes into detail when it comes to the nutritional content of this guilt-free snack.

"When it comes to weight loss, protein is essential. It not only is important to preserve muscle mass during weight loss, but it also helps with satiety. ½ cup of 1% cottage cheese has 80 calories and 12 grams of protein. As for the whole grain saltine crackers, they are a low-calorie carbohydrate option that provides texture and flavor to the snack. 5 whole-grain saltine crackers have around 70 calories. Overall, this healthy snack has 12 grams of protein and 150 calories," says Mejia.

The Bottom Line

The best thing about this snack is it only contains 2 simple ingredients, truly making it a convenient but healthy option.

"Just two simple ingredients are needed and just one step to prepare this snack. Serve the feta cheese and the crackers on a small plate. As an option to add more flavor, you could also [sprinkle some] seasoning," Mejia recommends.
