Low-sugar foods have gained popularity as a healthier dietary choice, often associated with weight management and improved overall health. These products are designed to reduce sugar content, making them appealing to individuals seeking to cut down on their sugar intake. However, while low-sugar foods may offer benefits, it’s essential to understand their potential effects on metabolism and waistline expansion.

We spoke with Mary Sabat, MS, RDN, LD, to learn about the one low-sugar food that can slow down your metabolism and cause weight gain if not taken in moderation. Sabat revealed that nuts are the culprit to avoid here.

Nuts

Nuts are renowned for their nutritional density and low sugar content, making them a favored snack choice for health-conscious individuals. However, when consumed excessively, the calorie-rich nature of nuts can potentially contribute to weight gain, as they are energy-dense. Additionally, some people may mistakenly assume that because nuts are low in sugar, they can consume them without moderation. Overindulging in nuts can lead to an excessive calorie intake, which, if not offset by increased physical activity, may lead to a slower metabolism and, ultimately, weight gain.

"Nuts, though nutritious, are calorie-dense and easy to overeat. Consuming more calories than the body needs can lead to weight gain. Some people may not feel as satiated after consuming nuts compared to other foods, potentially leading to overeating them," Sabat shares.

The Bottom Line

It's important to keep in mind that the overall quality and balance of one's diet, along with lifestyle choices, exert a more substantial influence on these aspects. Maintaining a well-rounded diet, monitoring portion sizes, and incorporating regular physical activity are the most effective ways to promote a healthy metabolism and waistline. Thus, while nuts offer numerous health benefits, portion control and balance are essential for incorporating them into a weight-conscious diet.
