Although holiday shopping may be behind us (Phew! We survived!) it’s always good to be a mindful shopper. From self-checkout scams to simple scanning blips, there are a number of reasons you may end up with a higher total on your receipt than you anticipated.
One TikTok user, @andreiitav_, recently took to the platform to give a warning about shopping at Macy’s, in particular. She urged shoppers to scrutinize their receipts, sharing a personal account of an incident in which she was charged for an extra idem. Find all the details below.

TikTok user gives warning about shopping at Macy’s
@andreiitav_ begins her video with a disclaimer. “I don’t know if this was intentional, I don’t know if Macy’s is just trying to get a commission, but let me tell y’all what happened yesterday,” she says, before giving a call to attention: “Pay attention to your totals when gift shopping. I’m gonna need y’all to start paying extra close attention to your receipts. Don’t let what happened to me happen to you,” she says.
She goes on to describe a predicament she experienced while stocking up on perfume gift sets at Macy’s. “I was at Macy’s trying to do some holiday shopping, in between a couple of gift sets,” she tells viewers. She explains that after being stuck between three different perfume sets, she finally settled on two, which were priced around $120 each. However, when it was time to pay, her total seemed fishy.
“Macy’s has this thing where you can scan this card right here in front of you. But they’re not actually scanning the stuff in front of you, they’re scanning it in the back,” @andreiitav_ explains, noting that she was “paying extra close attention to make sure that it’s only two items I’m being charged for.” Still, although she appeared to be charged for only two items, “the total was almost 400 dollars.”
Eventually—after paying—she realized that this total was way too high: “I’m like dude, why did I pay almost $400 for two gift sets.”
Luckily, after discovering that she was, indeed, charged for one extra gift set, she was able to go back to the counter, explain the misunderstanding, and receive reimbursement. “I’m gonna get my money back in probably 7 to 10 business days,” she says. “So just be careful because I know that whenever people are holiday shopping they’re expecting to pay a lot of money and they’re not really thinking about the math.”
This is a major reminder that you should always pay attention while your items are being scanned, and to check your receipt—and according to comments, it wasn't a unique incident. As one noted, "They alwayssss overcharge, how come they can't just make a mistake that benefits us."
One comment recounts a similar incident at Walmart: "The screen showed that I scanned two items, I paid and left home…the receipt showed I paid for 3 items. How?" Walmart, in particular, is notorious for issues like this
"Bath and bodyworks charged me extra for on sale items too," someone else echoed. "Got a handful of travel stuff that was supposed to be 2-3$ and they added $1+ each."
"Also be careful when checking and someone does a price check but charges," one comment warned. "Almost happened to me once."
However, many jumped in to note that this was likely an honest mistake. "Maybe it was an accident," one person wrote. "I used to work at Macy’s, they don't do commission. During the holidays I can confess that I have accidentally scanned things."
That was definitely accidental and she just didn’t notice," someone else agreed. "Sometimes scanners scan more than once on accident and Macys doesn’t do commissions."
Regardless, it's always good to keep an eye on things to make sure you don't pay more than you intended. Happy shopping!
