As we age our metabolism slows; in fact, our metabolic rate slows down by 10% each decade after age 20. We can’t control the rate at which our body breaks down food on its own–but we can make lifestyle changes and diet and exercise decisions that will help. One biggie? Green tea.

“Green tea has the potential to increase fat metabolism at rest, also during exercise, and may help to lose body fat and body weight,” general family practitioner Dr. Yelena Deshko tells us.

Green Tea Benefits

"The effect of green tea and green tea extracts have been studied in both humans and animals and show a number of positive effects including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer in addition to the metabolic benefits," Dr. Deshko says.

Not only does sipping or consuming green tea have a positive effect on the metabolism, but it also helps chronic conditions like heart's disease and cancers, she explains.

"Recent reports demonstrate that green tea may exert a positive effect on the reduction of medical chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and diabetes." Wow!

Are there any other things you can do to boost your metabolism? "Exercise increases metabolic rate several fold and moderate-intensity exercise has been found to elicit maximal fat oxidation rate," she advises.
