With Thanksgiving on the horizon, you may already be working on your grocery list for all the tasty recipes you’ll make on the big day—but two recent produce recalls on onions and mushrooms should be on your radar as you shop this holiday season.

Gills Onions has issued a recall on several of their chopped onion products, and Utopia Foods has recalled their packaged enoki mushrooms. Find all of the details, including what to do if you’ve purchased these items, below.

Gills Onions recall

Onions are one of the most essential kitchen staples, especially when Thanksgiving rolls around. Unfortunately, several diced onion products from Gills Onions have been recalled in six states due to possible Salmonella contamination.

The following recalled products from Gills Onions were sold in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington:

3lb bags of diced yellow onions8oz cups of diced yellow onions8oz cups of diced celery & onions10oz cups of diced Mirepoix8oz cups of diced red onions

Recalled products have use-by dates ranging from August 8 to August 28. While these dates have passed, some people may have them stored in their freezer. If you are one of these people, you should refrain from eating or cooking with the onions. You can learn more by contacting Gills Onions at 1-800-348-2255 or going to gillsonions.com.

This recall is part of an ongoing investigation of a Salmonella outbreak. According to the CDC, 73 people have been infected with Salmonella since October 24, 2023. 15 have been reportedly hospitalized.

Qilu Enterprise Enoki Mushrooms Recall

Mushrooms are another major ingredient in many fall meals. But if you've recently purchased packaged enoki mushrooms from the brand Qilu Enterprise, you should be aware of a recent recall issued by Utopia Foods. These mushrooms may be contaminated with listeria, the FDA reports.

The recalled products were sold to wholesale stores across five states—New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Maryland—between August 7, 2023 and October 20, 2023. These mushrooms were likely distributed to grocery stores across the nation.

Luckily, figuring out whether you have a package of this recalled product isn't hard, as they all have a UPC code of 928918-610109.

If you are in possession of a recalled product, you should either discard them or return them to the point of purchase for a full refund. You can contact Utopia Foods Inc. at 718-389-8898 for more information.

There have been no reported illnesses from this specific recall. However, it is the second enoki mushroom recall due to listeria this year; several people became infected with listeria from the first outbreak.

Listeria can be especially dangerous for those with compromised immune systems, the elderly, and pregnant women. Staying up-to-date on the latest recalls is an important part of keeping you and your family safe and healthy. Other recent recalls due to possible listeria contamination include Life Raft ice cream treats and kiwis.
