Soups have long been a beloved and versatile part of culinary traditions worldwide. They come in a wide variety of flavors, ingredients, and preparations, making them a go-to option for many looking for a comforting and nutritious meal. In recent years, premade soups have gained popularity, offering convenient solutions for those with busy lifestyles. However, while soups can be nourishing and wholesome, there are certain downsides to consider when it comes to their impact on our health.

We spoke with Amanda Lane, MS, RD, CSR, LDN, CDCES, to learn about why premade soups may not be as healthy as they are marketed to be. Downsides To Premade Soups

Premade soups have become a staple in the modern food industry, offering a wide array of flavors and styles that cater to diverse tastes and preferences. These convenient options are a quick and easy meal solution, particularly for individuals with busy schedules.

However, while premade soups are celebrated for their convenience, many store-bought versions can be laden with excessive sodium, preservatives, and artificial additives. The convenience that makes them a time-saver can also contribute to potential health concerns, such as increased sodium intake and a reduced control over the quality of ingredients.

Lane says, "Sodium is one of the scariest ingredients in premade soups. Sodium acts as a stabilizer to keep the soup from spoiling but it can also lead to increased blood pressure and inflammation. A better alternative would be to have a semi-homemade soup using low sodium broth as a base."

Additionally, some soups that have a slight sweet or creamy taste may also include added sugars, which can have a negative effect on health, potentially leading to weight gain and metabolic issues. Plus, the inclusion of artificial additives and preservatives could have lasting implications if consumed regularly.

The Bottom Line

Opting for healthier alternatives to premade soups is a wise choice for those seeking a nutritious and flavorful meal. One of the best alternatives is to prepare homemade soups from scratch, allowing you to control the ingredients and reduce the presence of unhealthy additives.

When time is limited, seeking out lower-sodium or reduced-fat canned soups with minimal artificial ingredients is another viable option. Additionally, exploring local delis and soup shops that offer freshly made, wholesome soups can provide a convenient and healthier alternative to mass-produced, store-bought options.

By making mindful choices and embracing these alternatives, you can savor the goodness of soup without compromising your health.
