Even if you can’t quite put your finger on the reason for it, you KNOW your iPhone isn’t working the way it used to work. Whether you’re constantly up against the most sluggish phone that takes forever and a day to load websites or download apps or you are met with resistance any time you try to snap a photo, it’s time to get to the bottom of why your phone is conking out on you. After all, an expensive investment like an Apple phone should be able to perform basic functions with incredible ease and efficiency, right?

There’s a really good chance your phone has this one major problem — and Apple Expert Umair Syed, IT Manager at SOUTHCENTRE Dental, is among the many tech pros who say this may be the reason your iPhone isn’t working properly.

Your Phone Lacks Storage Space

Storage space can make or break your phone (not literally, of course, but it can affect the way it functions in some rather major ways). “Insufficient storage capacity on an iPhone can result in a variety of performance and functionality issues,” Syed says. “These are several ways that a full iPhone storage can cause problems:

Sluggish performance

When an iPhone runs out of storage space, its performance may decelerate as it attempts to handle the minimal space available, according to Syed: “This may cause apps to load more slowly or break when attempting to utilize many apps simultaneously.”

Unable to download updates or applications

How frustrating is it to try and download an app or update, only to have your phone block you from doing so? “When there is insufficient storage space, the iPhone is unable to download new applications, update existing applications, or apply system upgrades. This may impede access to new features and security patches,” Syed says.

Picture and video difficulties

The same applies when you try to take photos or video and are met with a pop-up that prevents you from going further. “A full storage space can prevent you from shooting new photos or videos or cause problems with existing media assets, such as lost or corrupted photos or movies,” he warns.

Apple iCloud backups fail

“If you need to restore your iPhone, a full storage could prohibit it from backing up to iCloud,” Syed adds.

Decreased battery life

Lastly, a lack of storage places an additional demand on your phone battery, leading it to deplete more quickly than usual. It’s not your imagination: your phone really is in need of a charge far sooner than it used to be.

“To avoid these concerns, it is essential to frequently examine your iPhone’s storage capacity and delete any superfluous files or applications to free up space,” Syed recommends. “You may also improve your storage settings by enabling iCloud Picture Library or optimizing your audio storage to limit the amount of space media files consume.”

A lack of storage space isn’t the end of your phone’s life, but it is a major problem that should be addressed so that you get the best user experience possible.
