It’s the age-old question: how safe is it to charge your phone overnight? It’s obviously super convenient to be able to hook your phone up to a charger and leave it there for hours upon hours while you doze off — but should you? The answer may cause further frustrations, but it will shed light on the pros and cons of this popular charging method. Is it safe to charge your phone overnight? We asked tech experts.

Yes — but there’s a caveat

There is no one definitive answer to the age-old question of whether or not it is safe to charge your phone overnight, according to Robin Salvador, the chief marketing officer of Seekfast, a software development company based in Bulgaria. “In general, it is generally safe to do so, but there are a few caveats that should be taken into consideration,” Salvador said. “First and foremost, if you have a newer phone with a lithium-ion battery, charging it overnight could increase its temperature significantly.”

This can cause the battery to overheat and potentially fail, Salvador confirmed. “If you’re using a phone that has a lithium ion battery, always make sure to let it cool completely before charging it again,” Salvador said. “Second, if you’re using an older phone with a traditional battery, charging it overnight may not be as dangerous as you might think.”

However, keep in mind that the longer the phone is plugged in overnight, the more damage it can do to the battery. “If you’re only going to be using your phone for a few hours tonight and don’t plan on leaving it plugged in all night long, then charging it overnight shouldn’t be an issue,” Salvador said.

Finally, always make sure to use a proper charger for your device.

“Overcharging can damage your phone’s battery and also void your warranty,” Salvador said. “Use only certified chargers made specifically for lithium ion batteries and make sure they are used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.”

When it comes to whether you should charge your phone overnight, the answer remains complicated. Keep these tips in mind so that you make wiser charging choices (whether or not you ultimately decide that charging your device overnight is right for you).
