Have you ever wondered which iPhone mistakes tech experts consider the absolute worst? Depending on who you ask you’ll hear a variety of answers that range from “never download the Facebook app” to “stop charging your phone for hours and hours.” But there are certain tips that many experts agree upon if you want to keep your phone working long-term and save money. Tech and security experts say you should avoid these iPhone mistakes at all costs. Some of them are dangerous to your phone, while others are bound to slow it down and give you a worse iPhone user experience.

Closing Out Apps

iPhone users are warned that swiping closed apps may damage the phone’s battery — this is primarily due to the fact that many of us mistakenly think “recently used apps” are running and close them to save battery and power, says Tech Expert Emma Jones, SEO Associate at Thunderbolt. The problem is: these recently used apps are not running; they are in standby mode for you to easily navigate and multitask.

“Most people think the apps running in the background consume unnecessary CPU and RAM cycles and negatively affect the iPhone’s performance and its battery life,” Jones says.

“When you switch away from an application, iOS automatically suspends it so it no longer uses the device’s CPU or RAM. You shouldn’t try to manage the system.”

The system automatically launches an app you were previously using and stores the image in memory when you switch back to it. Jones reminds us, and this is much faster and easier than relaunching the application from scratch.

“Force-quitting all applications causes the system to start from scratch, which slows down the whole process as well as drains your battery faster,” Jones says. “Only by force quitting an app when it is misbehaving should you consider doing so. Normally, people use their iPhones regularly but also try to clean them at the same time by clearing all the recently used apps. Avoid cleaning up all recent apps as they harm the performance and battery life of the iPhone.”

Not Properly Caring For Your iPhone

Another big mistake that iPhone users make is not properly caring for their phones when they incur damage.

Even though it is an expensive phone, it can still be ruined if people don’t take care of it,” says Michael Jan Baldicana, SEO and technical content specialist with Dream Chasers. “The most common mistake that people make with their iPhones is dropping them in water or forgetting to plug them in after a long day of use.”

If you notice your iPhone beginning to turn off and not charging, Baldicana suggests setting a hard reset by holding down the Home button and the Volume Up button for about 10 seconds until a "Slide to power off" message appears on the screen. If it does not work, you should contact Apple support.

“Another mistake that people make is dropping your iPhone on the ground that can cause damage to the device and it is also very dangerous,” Baldicana says. “The reason why people make this mistake is because they think that their phone will be fine if they drop it on a soft surface like a bed or a couch. But when you drop your iPhone, you are risking its health as well as its appearance. When people buy an iPhone, they may not know all the features that are available. They might not know how to take care of their device and what to do when it's broken.”

Protect your phone by covering it with a sturdy case and think twice before force quitting apps.
