While we know that the CDC recommends wearing a face covering in public during the COVID-19 outbreak, this only leads to more questions IRL. Should you take it off once you’re back in your car? What if you are alone? Here’s what experts are saying on the topic:
The answer is no–if you are alone in your car, experts agree that you do not need to wear one.
That goes for close family members, as well. If you are with family that you share a home with and everyone is healthy, then you don’t need to wear one.

In fact--it may help the maintain the efficacy of the mask for longer if you don't. "If you only use it when outside and exposed, its usefulness will stay active, as some masks have filters that need changing over time, or the mask needs to be disposed of," Dr. Giuseppe Aragona, general practitioner and medical advisor at Prescription Doctor tells us.
So--what should you do to stay safe in your vehicle?
Spray Your Car
Dr. Pia Lieb, DDS, founder of Cosmetic Dentistry Center in NYC, suggests spraying your car with Lysol. "If you do not have Lysol or other cleaning spray, try putting rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle, which can help with cleaning or disinfecting. You can also add essential oils to help mask the smell."
Wear A Mask In A Car Service Or Uber
"If you are in an Uber or car service with a stranger, with someone that MAY be sick, or near the elderly - wear a mask," Dr. Lieb advises. "You do not know if you are a carrier and the mask can help protect you and those around you."
