There’s a good chance you use your phone to stream so much media — from music and movies to TV shows and podcasts. If you haven’t already noticed, all of that streaming can do a number on your device’s battery. Before you delete your Netflix app (because you know you really don’t want to do that), Tech Expert Yousun Allen, CEO at Yosun UV Printer, has tips on how to improve your battery power while you’re streaming fun entertainment. This is the one streaming mistake every iPhone user should stop making because it drains your battery so fast.

Not Taking Precautions Before Streaming

The problem isn’t that you are streaming media on your iPhone — the problem is that you aren’t properly prepared to stream media, which means your battery will dip down low and could leave you in the dust just when you need it. The solution is simple: take a few precautions before streaming. Start by examining the battery’s use, Allen recommends.

“When you see your iPhone battery draining quickly, the first question that comes to mind is, ‘Why is my battery draining so quickly’” and ‘What is draining my iPhone power?,’” Allen says. “As a first step, after you’ve identified the app that’s causing your iPhone battery to deplete rapidly, you may update it. If the software continues to produce issues, you can uninstall it. If you discover that these applications are not to blame for your iPhone’s battery consumption, you may easily re-download them at a later time.”

Allen provides these steps to follow:

i. Go to Settings > Battery

ii. Wait a few seconds for the Battery Usage feature to load on the Battery screen;

iii. Select “Last 7 Days” to display the percentage of battery consumed by each app over the previous seven days.

iv. Tap the time indication to access each app’s detailed information;

v. Figure out which applications consume the most battery life on your iPhone;

vi. You may now choose whether to update or uninstall the offending apps. If you notice that an app you rarely use is eating your battery excessively, delete it.

Once you identify some battery-draining culprits, Allen recommends taking three steps to preserve your battery.

Select 'Low Power Mode' from the drop-down menu.

“Enabling Low Power Mode on your iPhone minimizes power consumption and extends the life of your iPhone's battery by several hours over standard mode,” Allen says. “Mail fetch, background app refresh, automated downloads, and various visual effects are automatically lowered or turned off when Low Power Mode is enabled. This will significantly extend the life of your iPhone's battery. When it's turned on, the iPhone's battery bar becomes yellow. Flip the switch next to Low Power Mode's to turn it on. Go to settings > tap Battery > toggle the switch next to Low Power Mode's to turn it on.”

Disable the 'Raise to Wake' feature.

“With iOS 10, the Raise to Wake option in your iPhone settings is enabled by default,” Allen says. “When you pick up your iPhone or iPad from a flat surface, the Raise to Wake function immediately wakes it up. When you walk around a lot with your iPhone in your hand, it wakes up automatically and stays turned on all the time, which is one of the reasons why your iPhone battery drains quickly. To conserve iPhone battery life, switch off the Raise to Wake's option if your iPhone battery drains quickly.

To turn off Raise to Wake,' go to Settings > Display & Brightness > flick the switch next to Raise to Wake off.”

Keep applications up to date (including iOS update)

“When your iPhone 5, iPhone 6, or iPhone 7 battery drains quickly, it might be due to outdated programs,” Allen says. “Bug patches are frequently included in software updates, and some of these may be the reason of your iPhone battery depleting quickly. Developers prepare and optimize their apps for the current iOS version when Apple announces a new iOS update. As a result, make sure your iPhone or iPad is compatible with the most recent iOS version. Taking the effort to update all of the available applications may have a significant impact on the battery life of your iPhone or iPad.”

The more prepared your phone is to weather a media streaming onslaught (or just a few hours of watching your favorite show), the longer your battery will last.
