Donuts
Donuts, with their irresistible combination of sweet, fried dough and mouthwatering toppings, are a beloved treat for many. However, these delectable pastries are often high in calories, saturated fats, and refined sugars. Consuming them in excess can contribute to weight gain and other health issues.
"Donuts are a triple threat: high in sugar, fat, and calories. A single donut can pack anywhere from 200 to 400 calories, and that's before any extra fillings or toppings. The high sugar content causes a rapid spike in blood sugar levels, leading to a subsequent crash that can trigger more cravings," Hickey says.
Milkshakes
Milkshakes, with their creamy, sweet allure, are a popular indulgence, especially during warm weather. However, their link to weight gain is notable due to their high calorie and sugar content. Many milkshakes can pack in more calories than an entire meal, and the sugars they contain can lead to quick energy spikes followed by crashes, increasing the likelihood of overeating.
Hickey states that "a typical milkshake can contain up to 800 calories and a staggering amount of sugar, sometimes exceeding 100 grams. The high caloric and sugar content can lead to insulin resistance over time, making it harder for your body to regulate blood sugar and store fat efficiently."
Candy Bars
Candy bars, with their tempting mix of sugar, fats, and often, empty calories, are a well-known culprit in the realm of weight gain. These delectable snacks can lead to excess calorie consumption, as they're typically high in both sugar and saturated fats. The combination of rapid sugar absorption and the satisfying taste can make it easy to overindulge in these treats, leading to a surplus of calories that, over time, contribute to weight gain.
"Candy bars often contain sugar, fats, and additives. A standard-sized candy bar can contain around 200-300 calories and added sugar. The high sugar content can increase insulin levels, encouraging fat storage and, ultimately weight gain," Hickey notes.
Consumed in moderation, donuts, milkshakes, and candy bars can offer a sweet moment of enjoyment, but their link to weight gain underscores the importance of mindful snacking and incorporating them sparingly within a balanced diet.
