Target has a gift for its hard-working employees heading into their second pandemic holiday season working for a big box store: the Minneapolis-based chain will give workers an extra $2 an hour this year during peak days of the holiday season.
The store announced the news via a press release on their website on October 5th; the extra pay will go to employees of the stores and service centers who work on weekend days from November 20th to December 19th, 2021, as well as on Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas. Those workers who clock in for Saturdays and Sundays during peak holiday season will see an additional $2 per hour reflected in their paycheck.
“Team Target, your presence is a gift!” opened the letter. “This team continues to be at the heart of our strategy. You have shown up consistently for our guests and one another with a tremendous amount of care and we know this busy holiday season will be no different,” chief human resources officer for the company Melissa Kremer agreed. We’re happy that the store is putting its money where its mouth is in that regard–although some workers have already begun to express feeling underwhelmed by the amount.
Employees of a Target Distribution Center in Charleston, Michigan told their local news channel that “it was far less than employees deserved.” And that very well may be true for retail workers–especially in this current climate. “As if many retail workers haven’t had to deal with enough Karens already, just imagine the holiday season!!!” pointed out one Twitter user.
The retailer seems to be at least making an attempt to reward workers and keep them retained on through the peak season as many of their competitors struggle to fill jobs. Target’s current minimum wage is $15/hour. The company has also said that it will scale back on seasonal hiring and give more hours to its current employees. They also launched an app that allows employees to pick up on-demand shifts.
