When you think about all of the ways that you can be messing with your iPhone battery and the device itself, what comes to mind? If you haven’t considered how nighttime mistakes can contribute to a failed device, you are missing out on a major opportunity to right a wrong. There’s plenty of talk about charging your iPhone — what’s too little, what’s too much, and what’s just right. On that note: tech experts say to avoid this nighttime mistake at all costs — it’s so bad for your iPhone.

Don’t Charge Your Phone Overnight

Sure, it’s convenient to pop your phone onto a charger and let it work its magic while you sleep so that it’s ready when you need it. But this is one of the worst things you can do to your iPhone. “Allowing your iPhone to charge while you sleep may be helpful — however, it’s not a smart idea,” says Steven Walker, CEO of Spylix. “Keeping your iPhone connected after it’s fully charged can harm your battery over the long run, and it could begin dying all the more rapidly. Try charging it during the day so you can turn it off once it’s completely charged, or utilize an outlet that shuts down through a clock.”

William Cannon, Founder of Signaturely, also says charing your iPhone at night is a terrible habit.

“Charging your iPhone overnight can shorten its battery life,” Cannon says. “The battery of the iPhone is made of lithium-ion. This material is very reactive to heat. Charging your iPhone overnight can cause overheating of the battery which can greatly affect the performance and even the life of the battery. Apart from it, overheating may cause a fire.”

Avoid making a big nighttime iPhone mistake by charging your phone sporadically throughout the day. Aim to keep it charged between 30 and 80 percent and it will run its best.
