Let’s face it, we’re all guilty of picking up produce from the grocery store without thinking twice about it. However, some pesticide residue found on conventional produce can lead to a slower metabolism. As reported by Eat This, Not That!, a study in Obesity Review found that people whose bodies show high levels of the pesticide organochlorines tend to have a slower metabolism and have a more difficult time losing weight. Say it ain’t so!
The Environmental Working Group, an activist group for research in agriculture and toxic chemicals, released its 2020 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce list of the top 12 fruits and vegetables that typically contain the highest level of pesticide residue. The list includes strawberries, spinach, kale, nectarines, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery, and potatoes.
As you can see, it is key to buy organic produce over conventional produce. In an interview with Health, Dr. Mark Hyman explains why choosing organic vegetables at the grocery store is so important. Produce that isn’t organic “blocks your metabolism mainly by interfering with your thyroid, which is your body’s thermostat and determines how fast it runs,” Hyman explains. Noted!
So remember, it’s important to do research into all of the seemingly healthy foods you’re depending on for your diet. You never really know what may be lurking in the items you buy until you take a deeper dive to learn the facts.
