Admit it, there’s nothing better than a cup of coffee to wake up your soul in the morning. From hot to iced and from black coffee to coffee with creamer, the options are endless when it comes to your daily cup of joe.

Most of us need a serious dose of caffeine in the morning to get us going and while drinking coffee isn’t the worst thing for your health, there are ways to make your coffee as healthy as it can be. With just a few simple tips and tricks you will feel a little less guilty about relying on coffee during your busy morning routine.

Coffee actually has a lot of great health benefits when you stick to the basics. According to Healthline, coffee can help you burn fat since the caffeine found in coffee has been found to increase your metabolic rate. Coffee also contains essential nutrients like vitamin B2, B5, potassium, and magnesium. How amazing is that?!

However, it’s key to keep your coffee as simple as possible, and by that we mean it’s time to skip the sugars and the creamers. In fact, there’s one scary reason why you shouldn’t add creamer to your coffee.

Creamer isn’t the best for you and your waistline and we’ll let the experts explain why. Eat This, Not That! recommends skipping over flavored creamers since they can be devoid of dairy and contain lots of sugar. The food website says it’s best to choose a splash of milk in your coffee since milk is the best “creamer” there is due to the calcium and vitamins found in milk.

In an interview with Byrdie, dietitian and nutritionist Kristen Carli offered some invaluable advice on how to approach making your coffee each morning. “Ask yourself: How much creamer do you put in per cup? How many cups do you drink each morning? Depending on the creamer and how much you put in your coffee each morning, you can very easily hit your limit on added sugars per day,” Carli explained. What great advice!

Remember: Stick to a basic black cup of coffee for the sake of your gut health, and add just a splash of milk if cream is an absolute essential for you.
