Trans Fats
Trans fats are unhealthy fats, and they can hurt your metabolism. According to Lynell Ross, certified health and wellness coach and nutritionist, they should definitely be avoided: "Not only does trans fat clog our arteries and lead to heart disease, but they can lead to insulin resistance which results in slower metabolism and weight gain."
Plus, they might be more common than you think. Ross continues, "Many cheaply made foods still contain trans fats such as packaged muffins, pastries and donuts."
Refined Carbohydrates
She also recommends staying away from refined carbs. She explains, "When the fiber has been stripped away from the whole grain, the body doesn't have to burn extra calories to digest these foods, and slows your metabolism."
Instead, she recommends sticking to whole grains: "Choose whole grains and foods with fiber to boost your metabolism and give you nutrients your body needs to thrive."
