Soil-Based Probiotics
Health coach Dr. Lauryn Lax says that she recommends either a soil-based or spore-based probiotic as the most effective supplement to take. She further recommends pairing such a supplement with lactic acid bacteria, which you can get from eating fermented foods. "Also, remember, don’t neglect the importance of pre-biotics (the fiber that FEEDS your probiotics and helps them “stick” in your gut)," Lauryn says.
Personal trainer Casey Thaler, B.A., NASM-CPT, FNS, explains the importance of taking a probiotic supplement for overall good health. "While fermented foods can be great, the sheer amount of foods you’d have to consume in order to get the same benefits from a probiotic makes this fairly improbable," Casey says.
Although you don't get as many nutrients from fermented foods as you would from a probiotic supplement, you can consume such foods to aid your weight loss goal. Examples of fermented foods and drinks include sauerkraut, miso, kefir, kombucha, pickles, and yogurt.
