Tummy fat, particularly in individuals over 40, can be a common concern. As we age, hormonal changes and a slowing metabolism can make it challenging to maintain a trim waistline. To address this issue, making dietary adjustments is often crucial. One effective strategy is reducing the consumption of certain types of meats.

We spoke with Jesse Feder, RDN, CPT, to learn about the one certain meat that you should cut out because it can lead to increased belly fat over 40. Feder revealed that processed meats, such as hot dogs, are a significant contributor to the accumulation of abdominal fat in older adults for many different reasons. Read on to learn more.

Processed Meats

Processed meats, like hot dogs, and also bacon and sausages, are well-known for their convenience and savory flavors. However, they are often rich in unhealthy saturated fats, sodium, and additives. In individuals over the age of 40, these processed meat products can be particularly problematic when it comes to tummy fat. The high saturated fat content in processed meats is associated with an increased risk of visceral fat accumulation – the type of fat that surrounds vital organs in the abdomen.

"Hot dogs are not only high in unhealthy fats and calories, but they are highly processed with pro-inflammatory ingredients. This can really make it difficult to lose weight and even lead to fat gain. That is why, when you cut out this meat, you can reduce abdominal and overall body fat," Feder notes.

While the idea of parting with popular American staples such as hot dogs can be a tough pill to swallow, it's important to recognize that these processed foods pose a threat not only to our waistlines but also to our heart health, which is very important as we age.

The Bottom Line

In the quest for better dietary choices, there are healthier alternatives to processed meats such as hot dogs. Exploring these alternatives can lead to a more nourishing and satisfying meal while reducing the associated health risks often linked to processed meat consumption.

"I recommend at the very least to opt for turkey hot dog alternatives. Turkey hot dogs are lower in unhealthy fats and calories. However, it is best to stick to fresh lean cuts of meat instead of processed meat. This can be things like chicken breast, turkey breast, pork tenderlois, sirloins, bison, and fish," says Feder.

Overall, reducing the consumption of hot dogs and even other highly processed meats is a wise dietary choice for those looking to maintain a healthier waistline and overall well-being as they age.
