As we live in the digital era, there’s no denying that one of the things you most likely can’t live without is your cellphone. You use it to read the news, to connect with people on social media, to communicate with your loved ones, and more. Let’s be real: checking your mobile phone is probably the first thing you do when you get up in the morning and the last thing you do before you go to bed at night. (We can totally relate!)
It’s a habit many of us follow, but have you ever wondered what actually happens to your body when you use your electronic devices before going to sleep? We asked Dr. Erin Stokes, Naturopathic Doctor and Medical Director at MegaFood to find out. Keep reading to learn more.
The Effects Of Having Screen Time Before Bed
According to Dr. Stokes, "Using your phone before bed, or being on any screen before bed, suppresses melatonin production." She explains, "Melatonin is a hormone that your brain produces in response to darkness. It is essential for regulating our sleep or wake cycles, and very important for restful sleep."
Dr. Stokes notes, "Additionally, using your phone right before bed may expose you to disturbing news or other unsettling information that makes it difficult to turn 'off' our brains and rest." After a long and tiring day, the last thing you need is to worry about things that are out of your control. You owe it to yourself to get the relaxation you truly deserve.
Nighttime Habits You Can Try Instead
Understandably, we know that staying away from screens before sleeping is easier said than done. "Being on your phone right before bed is a habit that can be difficult to change, but it can be very liberating once you commit to staying off of it," Dr. Stokes tells us. "Some tips include setting a bedtime on your iPhone with built-in wind down time, replacing phone time with a different habit like reading a new book, and rewarding yourself with a treat that promotes sleep, such as a warm bath or shower."
At the end of the day, take this as your friendly reminder that rest is not a reward, but a necessity. It's crucial for your overall health and wellbeing. So when it's time for bed, putting your devices down will always be a good idea.
