Weight gain is a complex issue that can be influenced by various factors, and one of the most significant culprits often associated with this problem is the consumption of processed foods. In today’s fast-paced world, these convenience foods have become a dietary staple for many. However, not all processed foods are created equal, and some are notorious for contributing to unwanted pounds.
To learn about four of the worst processed foods you should stay away from, we spoke to Mary Sabat, MS, RDN, LD. Sabat revealed that processed meat snacks, instant noodles, packaged pastries and baked goods, and sugary breakfast cereals are some of the popular processed foods that almost always lead to weight gain if consumed excessively.
Processed Meat Snacks
Processed meat snacks, such as beef jerky, sausages, and pepperoni sticks, have gained popularity as convenient on-the-go options. However, these products are often high in unhealthy fats, sodium, and preservatives, making them a potential contributor to weight gain.
Sabat says, "Beef jerky, sausages, and hot dogs are high in unhealthy fats and additives that can contribute to weight gain, including visceral fat."
Excessive consumption of processed meat snacks can lead to an increased calorie intake and may promote overeating due to their addictive flavors and convenient packaging.
Instant Noodles
Instant noodles, while convenient and budget-friendly, are often associated with weight gain due to their high levels of refined carbohydrates and unhealthy additives. These quick and easy meals are typically low in nutrients and fiber, leaving you feeling less satisfied and more prone to overeating.
"Instant noodle cups or packets are loaded with sodium, unhealthy fats, and often contain MSG and artificial additives that can promote fat storage," Sabat reveals.
Additionally, the excessive salt content in instant noodles can lead to water retention and bloating, which may give the false impression of weight gain.
Sugary Breakfast Cereals
Sugary breakfast cereals, often marketed to children and adults alike, are a concerning contributor to weight gain. These cereals are typically loaded with added sugars, lacking the necessary fiber and protein that promote feelings of fullness and stable energy levels throughout the morning.
"Many sugary cereals are packed with added sugars and refined carbohydrates, leading to insulin spikes and fat storage, including visceral fat," Sabat reveals.
Regularly consuming sugary breakfast cereals has been associated with various health issues such as increased weight gain, making it advisable to opt for more nutritious breakfast options that provide sustained energy and better support weight management.
Packaged Pastries and Baked Goods
Packaged pastries and baked goods, like muffins and cookies, are delicious treats that are often high in sugar, unhealthy fats, and refined flours. These ingredients can contribute to weight gain when consumed frequently.
Sabat explains that "donuts, pastries, and other baked goods often contain trans fats, refined flours, and added sugars that can promote visceral fat accumulation."
Moreover, the unhealthy fats often found in packaged pastries can promote fat storage in the body. While indulging in these treats occasionally is perfectly fine, overconsumption of packaged pastries and baked goods can lead to excess calorie intake and weight gain, making it important to enjoy them in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
