These bars promise to provide a quick protein fix, helping to curb cravings and promote muscle growth. However, as with any dietary product, not all protein bars are created equal, and some can inadvertently sabotage your weight loss goals and leave you feeling bloated and uncomfortable.

We spoke with Jesse Feder, a personal trainer & registered dietitian, to learn about two of the worst protein bars that cause bloating and slow down weight loss. Feder revealed that Gatorade protein bars and Think! high protein bars are the ones to steer away from.

Gatorade Protein Bars

Gatorade protein bars, despite their association with athletic performance and replenishment, can sometimes contribute to unexpected weight gain and bloating. These bars often contain not only protein but also added sugars and artificial ingredients that can provide an energy boost but may also result in excess calorie consumption. Additionally, the high sugar content in some Gatorade protein bars can lead to fluctuations in blood sugar levels, potentially triggering cravings and overeating.

"Gatorade protein bars are high in calories, fats, saturated fats, carbohydrates, and sugar. They are around 330 calories per bar and almost 30g of sugar. Additionally, the majority of the fats in this bar are pro-inflammatory saturated fats. These things can most definitely slow down weight loss and lead to GI issues such as bloating," Feder says.

Think! High Protein Bars

Think! high protein bars, while marketed as a nutritious option for those seeking to boost their protein intake, can, in some cases, contribute to weight gain and bloating. These bars often contain high levels of protein and fiber, which can make them quite filling. However, the fiber content, combined with certain sugar alcohols used as sweeteners in some Think! bars, may lead to gastrointestinal discomfort and bloating in sensitive individuals.

"While Think! high protein bars are marketed as healthy options due to their 0 sugar content, they actually can cause bloating and slow down your weight loss. Think! uses a high amount of sugar alcohols in their protein bars which replaces the need for sugar. Sugar alcohols are notorious for causing things like headaches and bloating. Additionally, the high protein bars are not exactly low in calories and typically provide around 230 calories per bar which can slow down weight loss," Feder states.

It's clear that when it comes to choosing protein bars, being well-informed about their ingredients and potential effects on your weight loss journey is crucial. Remember, not all protein bars are created equal, and selecting the right one for your goals and dietary needs is paramount to your overall success.
