Restaurants are starting to open up with the appropriate safety measures, and most of us are ready to get out and enjoy a meal with family or friends. But after several months of home cooking and ordering take-out, it can be hard for most of us to avoid over-indulging at restaurants and hurting our diets. While there is nothing wrong with going out to eat and ordering something delicious, there is one popular food item you should never order.

Most experts will agree that nachos are one of the least healthy menu items on an appetizer list. This is usually surprising to most people because the snack is made with vegetables and foods known to be healthy, like guacamole, olives and peppers.

But the truth about nachos is that they are extremely unhealthy when you really look at them. They are made with fried chips, loads of cheese, sour cream and often beef. At the start of a meal, this can bring up your intake of fats and carbs. At some restaurants, there are as many calories in a plate of nachos as there are in a cheeseburger.

Most of us justify ordering nachos as a starter because the plate is typically shared among the whole table, but most appetizers are sized to accommodate sharing so you will still end up eating at least a full portion.

What To Order Instead
While nachos are a great starter for sharing, there are quite a few healthier options you can often find on a menu. Cheese plates or caprese salads are typically a good idea as they don't typically have a lot of high-carb foods on the plate. When in doubt, sharing a Caesar salad with a table can make for a great starter.
