Just when you thought the world couldn’t get any weirder, Studio Roosegaarde, a “social design lab for interactive art, fashion, and architecture” based in the Netherlands and China, created a dress that becomes transparent when you’re turned on. Yes, you read that right. The INTIMACY 2.0 dress is made of leather and smart e-foils that can measure your heart rate. As your heart rate quickens due to “close personal encounters,” the dress becomes more and more transparent. But how does it know if your’re actually turned on or if your heart rate is just quicker from everyday activities like speed walking to the subway or getting nervous? Well… the company was very vague, which means there’s no way that it can really tell that you’re turned on, so this dress should definitely be saved for the bedroom. But wait…it gets weirder.
INTIMACY 2.0 claims that this dress is “perfect to wear on the red carpet.” While both the black and white version of the dress are sleek and futuristic-looking (Think: Lady Gaga or Xenon from the 90’s), they definitely aren’t appropriate for the red carpet. Seriously, THE RED CARPET?! I’m sorry, but I’m pretty sure that the Academy Awards don’t want see-through dresses on the red carpet. Imagine what would happen if Kim Kardashian was wearing it and she got too close to Kanye West? Or what if something embarrassingly awkward happens? Like Taylor Swift being on the red carpet surrounded by all 328473092 of her exes, while wearing this ensemble. Or what if you give your crush a friendly hug?! It’s definitely a recipe for disaster, at least in public.
It will be interesting to see if this new dress model takes off and it really does appear on the runway or red carpet, but in the mean time, I’d like my dresses to be completely opaque. Thank you very much.
