Eating well doesn’t only benefit your body – healthy foods are good for your skin as well. So if your regular beauty routine doesn’t seem to be cutting it, you might want to rethink what you’re eating.

The best way to make sure your skin gets the proper nutrients it needs is to pick foods known to hydrate and nourish, and avoid those known to dry out your skin. The wrong foods can cause your skin to age prematurely, resulting in wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin.

As it turns out, the worst foods for your skin also happen to be the worst ones for your health. So it won’t be hard to determine what to avoid.

According to dermatologists, the worst food you can eat for anti-aging skin is potato chips – which should come as no surprise…

"[Don't eat] potato chips or anything that is super processed," Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank, NYC-based celebrity cosmetic dermatologist and author of The Pro-Aging Playbook, told SheFinds.

He added, "This can include baked or 'healthy alternatives' that may be lower in calories, but can be sky high in sodium. Sodium increases inflammation and also causes water retention, which can make your skin puffy and give an aged appearance."

According to Dr. Frank, the food you should really try to avoid is salt. This tends to be a common ingredient in potato chips and other overly processed foods.

Eating to much salt can not only dehydrate your skin, but it can also cause inflammation. This leads to acne breakouts, as well as those pesky dark circles under your eyes.

At the same time, certain salt-based topical beauty products might actually be good for your skin. Salt is a natural exfoliant, which makes it a great ingredient to include in a scrub.

If you're looking for a beneficial way to use salt to your skin's favor, take a look through some of our favorite scrubs here.
