While it might be easy to store most of your personal care items in the bathroom, doing so can not only ruin them, but it can also be detrimental to your health. Here are six things you should never keep in your bathroom medicine cabinet.

Medication

Most medicine should be stored at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees, and kept away from moisture or they will lose their potency. Because the bathroom is prone to high temperatures and humidity, it is a poor place to keep drugs.

Vitamins

Storing your vitamins bathroom also means exposing them to heat and humidity on a daily basis, even if they’re stashed away in the medicine cabinet.

Makeup

Again, the temperature changes and humidity can decrease the lifespan of your cosmetics, especially anything liquid like foundation, nail polish, concealer, etc.

Makeup brushes and sponges

Brushes can pick up the germs that float around in the bathroom. Then when you use these brushes to apply make-up, you spread the germs to your face and into your makeup.

Toothbrush

While storing your toothbrush in the medicine cabinet might seem like a great way to keep it away from germs (do you know what flies into the air if you don’t close the toilet lid before you flush?), you might be doing just the opposite. Trapped in a cabinet or container, your brush may not be able to dry between uses, creating a welcome environment for bacteria.

Razor

Whether new or used, razors shouldn’t be exposed to long periods of humidity and dampness. Not only can it dull the blade, but it also makes the razor a breeding ground for bacteria. It needs to be kept in a place where it can dry completely between uses (and be sure to replace it often).
